Obaj panowie znają się doskonale jeszcze z czasów gry na boiskach NBA. Występowali wspólnie w Detroit Pistons w latach 2003-2005, dwukrotnie grając obok siebie w Finałach, które wygrali w 2004 roku. Zważywszy na to, że Darvin miał dostać pełną swobodę przy doborze swoich współpracowników, oficjalne potwierdzenie ze strony Lakers powinno pojawić się w przeciągu kilkudziesięciu godzin. Do tej pory spędził on zaledwie jeden sezon w tej roli w NBA. W sezonie 2013/14 był asystentem w Detroit Pistons, lecz przychodzący w kolenych rozgrywkach Stan van Gundy zrezygnował z jego usług. Poza tym epizodem, trenował jeszcze liceum im Charlesa Jordana w Północnej Karolinie. Ostatni sezon natomiast zatrudniony był w roli asystenta Penny’ego Hardawaya na uczelni Memphis. Niestety jednak od stycznia pomagał Penny’emu zdalnie, będąc poza drużyną z powodu protokołów bezpieczeństwa i higieny. Wallace ma jednak za sobą 16 sezonów rozegranych na parkietach NBA. W tym czasie 4 razy był powoływany do Meczu Gwiazd, rozgrywając łącznie 177 spotkań w playoffs.
